Auditions - Bring Me The Derek (Annoyance)

Seeking actors for Bring Me The Derek, a 2-act karate opera written and directed by Emma Samson and Ben House! The audition form closes midnight on Wednesday, 9/9 and slots will be offered by Thursday, 9/10. Auditions will be held Saturday, 9/12 with callbacks Sunday 9/13. 

We are seeking ~8-10 actors, understudies and swings to take part in this production, with performances scheduled for Thursdays at 7:30 on 11/19, 12/3, 12/10 and 12/17 at The Annoyance.

Character Descriptions:

Derek Arate:

Our fourteen year old protagonist, struggling to learn karate, honor his father’s legacy, and stay financially afloat after falling victim to the Bodega Credit Card Scheme. Brash, stubborn and strongly opinionated, Derek seeks to carve his own destiny and save Barrington, IL from the clutches of crime.

Christine Arate:

Derek’s widowed mother, seeking closure for the death of her husband through an anonymous true crime blog. Though a loving mother, she is unrelenting in her search for justice.

Uncle Charles:

Derek’s uncle, and secret leader of Barrington’s underground crime ring. Manipulative and scheming, but at the end of the day wants what’s best for Derek (as long as it aligns with his goals).

Jared Leto (not that one):

Owner of the local Barrington karate dojo and Derek’s first instructor. Insecure about his offerings as a teacher.

Abraham Lincoln (yes that one):

Abraham Lincoln. Whatever that means to you.

Mr. Bodega Man:

Small business owner and entrepreneur. Founder of the Bodega Credit Card, with 200% hourly interest on all purchases.

Goons 1-3 (Cheese Shorts, Spoot Winkler & Tartar Portillo):

Uncle Charles’ loyal henchmen, each with a name stupider than the last.

The Honourable Judge Judith:

Little dandy king of the courtroom with a very noticeable lisp.

Policemen 1 & 2:

A dynamic duo of Barrington PD officers bringing Derek to justice. Inept, affable, and running a snacks-for-purchase side hustle out of their interrogation room.

Tin Can:

A sentient tin can, sage advice giver to Derek in his hour of need.
